Artist Charles Lutz’s latest group of work (Sold Series) deals with the themes of commerce, luxury, and the art world in general.
Featured on the Yoko Devereaux Fall 2008 t-shirt collection, this limited edition series consists of 20 paintings on tondo canvases, based on the designs of 19th Century gilded French porcelain.
The series references late 19th century American political cartoons to describe the push and pull, and highs and lows of the market.
Repeated in the series are the combination of gilded branches and birds that reference 19th Century French porcelain and also reflect the indulgent nature of collecting, the flock-like atmosphere of auctions, as well as the sometime solitary nature and anonymity of art collecting.
